There are plenty of reasons to visit Holmes County Ohio. For starters, it’s 42% Amish, and the 2nd largest Amish community in the United States behind Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  If you’re a history buff, Holmes County was named after Andrew Holmes, an officer in the War of 1812, and played a storied role in many past wars.  If you love art, you must see the Holmes County Open Air Art Museum, a fusion of art and nature at the Inn at Honey Run.  The region’s only Open Air Art museum showcases original works from local artists in a variety of different styles and mediums.  If you prefer glass, the Millersburg Glass Museum offers the largest public display of Millersburg Carnival and Crystal Glass produced between 1909-1912.

You can enjoy recreational activities at many available local camps like Skyview Ranch, a Christian camp, or enjoy a home cooked meal at Weaver’s Home Cooking. Not to mention, the exquisite shopping for locally made pottery, quilts, and furniture at Holmes County Pottery, The Jenny Wren, the Primitive Porch, or Schrock’s Heritage Furniture.

With all of that running around town, you’re bound to want a nice place to stop, rewind, and literally recharge with some coffee.

There are so many wonderful local coffee shops that deserve your patronage and support, and they have mean cups of java, among fine ambiance and really great food, too.

Here are the 6 Most Popular Locally-Owned Coffee Shops in the Holmes County, OH area:

1. The Red Mug Coffee Co.

The Coblentz family-owned Red Mug Coffee is located in the quaint Amish Auction town of Mt. Hope, and features a simple menu, small-batch roastery, and hand-crafted specialty coffee. Red Mug is in a great spot, and is within walking distance of the Mt. Hope Auction, Mt. Hope Harness and Shoe, Mt. Hope Country Health Store, and Mt. Hope Hardware (the second location of the famous Lehman’s Hardware store), Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen, Country Mart Grocery, Pizza Shop by Country Mart, and Premier Outdoors. This location is really convenient to the new Sleep Inn if you’re traveling into our area.

Make sure you try:  Although Red Mug has a fine line of freshly ground coffee (that many compare to coffee you’d find in Seattle),  people absolutely go crazy over their iced coffee! Oh, and their almond milk is freshly made in-house.

2. Jitters Coffee

Located in the newest part of Millersburg Village, Jitters definitely lives up to its name, as it helps you get rid of caffeine withdrawal jitters but also allows you to do the Jitterbug!  This venue was started as a church group meeting place, and still has party/meeting rooms available for rent for up to a 100 person capacity, perfect for any weddings, reunions, or meetings, or small gatherings.  Jitters is also family owned, by former public school teacher Martin Mann and wife Judy, and both understand the need for a wonderful and comfortable meeting place in town.

Make sure you try:  While you’re there, don’t forget to try the fresh doughnuts!  People come from all around to try the Jitters donuts, and they’re made fresh on site, daily.

3. New Grounds Coffee

New Grounds Coffee is located at the edge of Walnut Creek, and was founded mainly as a quality alternative for local youth, who were having to travel to other outlying cities for places to meet and hang out.  New Grounds is run by a non-profit 501(c) 3 board, and not only does it provide a safe place for the youth to stay out of trouble, it also functions as a ministry center for them. Each year, a huge Pancake and Sausage Breakfast is hosted as a fundraiser to continue the mission of New Grounds, so please check them out if you’re in the area.
